United Way of Lake County’s (UWLC) Calm Down Kits may be small, but their impact is mighty. Designed to help children manage stress, regulate emotions, and refocus their attention, each Kit is packed with sensory and tactile items including bubbles, fidget keychains, stress balls, zipper bracelets, sand timers, and a gratitude card. The Kits fit easily into a backpack or purse, making them perfect for use at home or on the go.

From a Gift to a Tool for Growth
Launched in 2022, Calm Down Kits were originally intended as a simple gift for families, a small token of support. Over time, however, they have evolved into powerful tools for mental and emotional wellness. As the Kits reached local agencies and families, their purpose expanded beyond calm and comfort to help children build skills and confidence in everyday situations.
Helping Families in Everyday Life
UWLC partners with agencies across Lake County to distribute the Kits to children and families. At Family Focus Highland Park, Kits are integrated into the Home Visiting Program, which provides in-home coaching to improve maternal and child health and strengthen family well-being. "Home Visitors introduce the Kits as a gentle, playful way to help kids calm down without relying on electronics or sugary treats," explains Bobbie Hinden, Center Director. Families report using the Kits during long car rides, doctor visits, and other moments when children need a positive distraction. "They are especially helpful for families with children who have special needs or frequent medical appointments," Hinden adds.
Tools for Learning and Development
For Home Visitor Nana Akuffo, the Kits are more than just handouts, they are part of the visit itself. "The bubbles in the Kit help us evaluate an infant’s visual development and ability to track objects," Nana shares. Other items, like zipper bracelets, are not just fidget toys, they help children build fine motor skills and hand strength. The Kits also introduce families to interactive educational activities, making learning playful and engaging.
A Community Effort
At the heart of every Calm Down Kit is the community coming together to make a difference. Each year, local businesses sponsor the materials, and UWLC organizes volunteer events to assemble the Kits. Last year, 1,785 Kits were created with the help of more than 600 employees who lent their hands and time, making each Kit with care.

Every Calm Down Kit represents more than tools and activities, it is a ripple of support, skill-building, and calm extending through families and the community. By providing children with resources to manage emotions and build skills, UWLC and its partners are helping Lake County families thrive, one Kit at a time.
