When Jonathan first started Kindergarten Countdown Camp (KCC), he was filled with fear. The unfamiliar environment, the new faces, and being away from home were overwhelming. His biggest hurdle? The school bus ride.
His mom recounted the first morning of KCC, “Jonathan sobbed uncontrollably getting on the school bus. It was heartbreaking to watch him. I worried whether Jonathan was ready for this separation. Was this too much, too soon? How was he possibly going to manage going to kindergarten in the fall?”
Jonathan continued to cry the entire bus ride. After arriving at KCC, it took the whole morning of gentle and patient care from dedicated teachers to help him find a sense of calm and safety.
Day by day, as KCC’s teachers worked with Jonathan, welcoming him with smiles, comforting words, and gentle encouragement—something amazing happened. Jonathan began to explore the classroom, make new friends, and find things that made him laugh. Each small step, each moment of bravery, was met with celebration and affirmation by his teachers.
By the end of that first week, a profound change had taken place.
The tears were replaced with bright smiles as Jonathan proudly waved to his mom as he stepped up onto the school bus. Jonathan’s mom shared,
“Getting on the bus was actually a good transition for routine.”
She was relieved and happy to see how Jonathan’s first hurdle of leaving home on the school bus transformed into a positive daily routine that helped him grow in confidence.
