Each morning, entering the Kindergarten Countdown Camp (KCC) classroom was a struggle for Damian. He was hesitant to participate, and he required multiple gentle redirections from his teachers to get his day started. Damian preferred to keep to himself, choosing to sit at a table apart from his classmates.
During the second week of camp, Damian began to feel more confident, entering the classroom with a smile. Damian’s teachers noticed a significant turning point when KCC’s Reading Buddies visited the classroom. These dedicated volunteers visit the KCC classrooms, sharing the joy of reading and leading creative activities that boost literacy skills and foster a love for books. The moment the Reading Buddies arrived something clicked for Damian. He quickly joined his classmates in ways his teachers hadn’t seen before, raising his hand, answering questions, joining the book discussion and engaging in the activity.
From that day forward, Damian’s hesitation was replaced by an eagerness to learn. His confidence grew as he started making friends and chose to sit with his classmates. He actively joined the classroom lessons and discussions without redirection from his teachers. He enjoyed engaging with his peers and teachers and looked forward to going to KCC.
And it didn’t stop there. As Damian opened up socially, he also grew academically—making impressive strides in key kindergarten readiness skills like shape recognition, counting, and rhyming. His growing confidence in learning matched his growing joy in the classroom.
Damian’s positive transformation was evident not only at school but also at home. Damian’s mom shared,
“I’ve seen a change at home in Damian’s behavior. He is following directions without multiple reminders. And he has been more responsible and cooperative with his responsibilities.”
By the end of KCC, Damian had blossomed into a confident, engaged, and cooperative student, embracing the joy of learning and connection.
